“AHEC of a Summer” 2013 a Success

Nine students from Allen Parish High Schools participated in the “AHEC of a Summer” program from May 28 – June 13 at Oakdale Community Hospital.

The “AHEC of a Summer” program is one of several SWLAHEC programs designed to expose high school students to the possibility of pursuing a career in health or medicine.  Multi-department hospitals or health centers serve as host sites for the program.  During the program, participants receive guidance about health care career options, volunteerism, patient care considerations, and high school course prerequisites appropriate for health sciences or health administration training, and post-secondary education.  Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students receive elective course credit toward high school graduation.

Oakdale Community Hospital and the Allen Parish School Board worked together to provide students with this exciting opportunity.  Becky Johnson, Human Resources Director, served as the clinical coordinator for the program at Oakdale Community Hospital.  Jared Manuel, teacher at Oakdale High School, served as the teacher/instructor.  Mr. Kent Reed and Ms. LeeAnn Maxwell were the education supervisors from the Allen Parish School Board.  This year there were approximately 30 Allen Parish High School students that applied to the program.

The students observed in all clinical areas of the hospital including the Wound and Hyperbarics Center.  Other health care businesses that students were able to visit were Oakdale Animal Clinic, Oakdale Physical Therapy, and Oakdale Drugs.   The students participated in field trips to the Oakdale Technical College and McNeese State University in Lake Charles.
